Milk Kefir - FAQs
1. What is Kefir?
Kefir is a wellness drink known for its probiotic richness, promoting gut health and immunity. Cultured using Kefir grains, a symbiotic mix of bacteria and yeast, it surpasses yogurt in probiotic diversity and live cultures. Its fermentation process enhances nutrient absorption, aids digestion, and may alleviate lactose intolerance. With a tangy taste and thinner consistency, Kefir is versatile for smoothies or standalone consumption. Its microbial composition contributes to a balanced gut microbiome, potentially offering anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. As a natural source of vitamins and minerals, Kefir stands as a nourishing, gut-friendly option for those seeking optimal digestive wellness.
2. What are the possible benefits of Kefir?
Kefir, a fermented milk product, is believed to have numerous evidence-based health benefits. Some are listed below:
- Nutrient-Rich: Kefir is a rich source of calcium, protein, and B vitamins, with bioactive compounds contributing to its health benefits.
- Potent Probiotic: With up to 61 strains of bacteria and yeasts, Kefir surpasses yogurt as a powerful probiotic, influencing digestion, weight management, and mental health.
- Antibacterial Properties: Kefir contains unique probiotics like Lactobacillus Kefiri and Kefiran, demonstrating antibacterial effects against harmful bacteria.
- Bone Health: Full-fat Kefir, rich in calcium and vitamin K2, supports bone health, potentially lowering the risk of osteoporosis and fractures.
- Cancer Protection: Test-tube and animal studies suggest Kefir may inhibit cancer cell growth, with potential immune-stimulating effects, though human studies are needed for confirmation.
- Digestive Health: Kefir's probiotics aid in restoring gut bacteria balance, proving effective in treating diarrhea and various digestive concerns.
- Low in Lactose: Fermentation reduces lactose content, making Kefir well-tolerated by those with lactose intolerance.
3. Is Kefir the same as yogurt?
Kefir is considered to be superior to yogurt due to its richer probiotic diversity, including up to 61 strains of bacteria and yeast, offering broader gut health benefits. The unique microbial composition, thinner consistency, and milder taste contribute to its versatility. Kefir's lactose reduction during fermentation may enhance digestibility for those with lactose intolerance. Additionally, its diverse nutrient profile, including calcium, protein, and B vitamins, adds to its appeal as a potentially more nutrient-dense option compared to yogurt.
4. How much quantity should I drink?
The ideal amount of Kefir to drink can vary depending on individual preferences, and health goals. If you are new to Kefir, we recommend starting with a small amount, such as 1/2 to 1 cup per person per day and increasing the quantity to up to 2 cups per day over time. Consulting with a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian can provide personalized recommendations based on specific health conditions and dietary needs.
5. Can I make Kefir just like yogurt/curd?
No. While both are fermented dairy products, their distinct methods and starter cultures mean you can't make Kefir exactly like yogurt. Making Kefir requires Kefir grains, a symbiotic mix of bacteria and yeast, while yogurt is typically made by adding saved yogurt to heated milk.
6. Do you use any artificial ingredients, flavoring agents, or preservatives?
Absolutely not. We make Kefir in small batches without using any artificial ingredients, flavoring agents or preservatives. The flavors we add (e.g., pineapple, pomegranate, mango) are extracted naturally from fresh organic fruits. Our products are very different from the commercially available products because we make everything fresh and in small batches.
7. How long can I store Kefir?
You can store Kefir in a refrigerator for one week. We recommend finishing the drink in 2 days after the lid is opened. As we do not add any preservatives, we recommend keeping Kefir in the refrigerator always.
